Costs

The following amounts are all in Australian Dollars ($ AUD). As a general guide, consider the following:

Institution's Application Fees
These vary between institutions, from $0 to $150. Most are non-refundable, but some actually are deducted from the tuition fees for the first semester if you go ahead with the application.

Tuition Fees
The exact tuition fees required are always found on the Offer of Place from the institution you are applying to enter. Tuition fees depend on which course is being taken and at which institution. (See Institutions and Courses, in this directory.)

As a general rule, you can expect to pay at least:

  Institution Cost/Year ($ AUD)

  Primary School $ 10,000.-
  Junior High School $ 12,000.-
  Senior High School $ 14,000.-
  Vocational Colleges $ 11,000.-
  Foundation Programs $ 14,000.-
  University U/G $ 16,000.-
  University Post Graduate $ 20,000.-

In addition, you must also consider setting aside money for books, materials, uniforms, excursions/field trips. Some courses require over $1500 for these additional course costs.

Visa application fees

The Department of Immigration's current charges for a Student Visa are:

  • Offshore Application $ 430.-
  • Application for Permission to Work $ 60.-

Overseas Student Health Cover
It is compulsory for Student Visa holders to have medical insurance, in the form of OSHC (Overseas Student health Cover). (See
www.worldcare.com.au for 2001 rates) The costs in 2000 were:

TIME

Up to 6 mths
Up to 12 mths

  Student only
$ 174.-
$ 358.-
  Student & Family
$ 348.-
$ 696.-

Medical examination fee
If you want to apply for a Student Visa, you must have a medical examination. The costs for this vary, but you must have the examination with an Australian Government recognized Medical Officer. If you are doing this in Australia, the 2000 costs were X-Ray, Free; Medical Examination, $230.

Living expenses
Generally international students need about $12,000.- for living expenses, including such things as rent, food, transport, entertainment, electricity, telephone, clothing etc. If your spouse is accompanying you, add about $ 5,000.- or if your child is coming add about $ 3,000. This does not include costs of purchasing a car or furniture.

Guardianship
The Australia Government now requires all students under 18 years to have a guardian on-shore, who will be legally responsible for these young students, to ensure that their welfare is protected and that they have suitable accommodation. If you do not have friends or relatives in the Australian city where you will study, either your high school or IAE Study in Australia can arrange a suitable guardian for you. The cost for this is generally over $ 1,000.-/year, however services offered vary depending on who is offering the service. Ask your IAE Study in Australia counselor to give you detailed information on our guardianship services.
